U. of Illinois Chancellor, Who Presided Over Salaita Affair, Will Step Down

The Chronicle of Higher Education
August 7th, 2015

Phyllis M. Wise, chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is resigning, effective next week, The News-Gazette reports. In a written statement, Ms. Wise cited “external issues” during the past year as factors in her decision to step down.
Ms. Wise presided over the controversial decision to rescind a job offer to Steven G. Salaita, a professor whose anti-Israel tweets caused an uproar. Mr. Salaita’s supporters said the job denial represented a threat to academic freedom. Ms. Wise’s announcement occurred on the same day a federal judge ruled that the university cannot disavow having contractual obligations to Mr. Salaita.
