University of Akron cuts could undermine community relationships, support
July 31st, 2015

Staffing cuts, some so targeted and deep that entire departments have disappeared, have left some local clergy, homeowners and educators wondering if the University of Akron is still part of the surrounding community.
UA trustees voted Monday to cut 213 positions, and the employees were either given two-week notices or escorted immediately off campus Monday and Tuesday.
One department — Off-Campus Student Services — with its community outreach effort and assistance to students with housing issues was not spared.
When UA cut its baseball team, Off-Campus Student Services stepped in to help the players.
Others say they will miss what the department did to help build the university’s relationship with the community and efforts to support the safety and welfare of the surrounding neighborhood.
