‘Whiteness’ Course at Arizona State Draws Torrent of Hate Mail

A professor at Arizona State University has received hostile emails and has been harassed on the campus and online after a Fox News commentator criticized a special-topics course he is teaching this semester called “U.S. Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness,” The Arizona Republic reports.
The professor, Lee Bebout, has received at least 70 hostile emails since January, when the Fox News correspondent Elisabeth Hasselbeck described the course as “unfair and wrong” in a segment of Fox & Friends. One person wrote, “I look forward to your suicide.” Another wrote, “I’d enjoy seeing you swing from a light pole.”
Arizona State lists no specific description for the course, but in a statement released in January it said the class “uses literature and rhetoric to look at how stories shape people’s understandings and experiences of race. It encourages students to examine how people talk about — or avoid talking about — race in the contemporary United States.”
