UCLA’s Faculty Senate Approves Requiring a Course on Diversity

A controversial requirement that undergraduates at the University of California at Los Angeles take a course on the value of ethnic, cultural, religious or gender diversity has been strongly approved by the Faculty Senate. The new policy will apply to most incoming freshmen this fall. Chancellor Gene Block supported the measure, saying it would help prepare students for a multicultural society. But one opponent said that at UCLA, “it is like forcing Norwegians to get inoculated against malaria.”
