Petition Seeks Reinstatement of Professor Fired for Restraining Student

The Chronicle of Higher Education

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition asking for the reinstatement of a tenured theater professor at Dixie State University who was fired after physically restraining a student as a teaching technique, The Spectrum reports. The professor, Varlo Davenport, told the newspaper that a student “felt like she was physically assaulted” after he restrained her in a classroom full of students at the Utah university.
Following her complaint, a faculty hearing committee recommended that Mr. Davenport be reinstated. But the institution’s president, Richard B. (Biff) Williams, rejected that recommendation after he determined the committee’s position was “contrary to the information presented.”
