Cornel West, the public intellectual and civil-rights activist, has
canceled an April lecture at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in protest of its decision not to hire Steven G.
Salaita, the Chicago Tribune reports. Mr. West called the university’s treatment of Mr. Salaita “a moral scandal.”
The university offered Mr. Salaita a tenured professorship in Native American studies last year, but then decided not to hire him after he was criticized for his anti-Israel tweets. Academic-freedom advocates rallied around the case, protesting the Board of Trustees’ eventual decision to nix his appointment. He has since sued the university and unnamed donors he says conspired to cancel his hire.
