Another Speaker Cancels Events at U. of Illinois Over Salaita Controversy

Another high-profile figure has canceled a speech at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign over the controversy surrounding Steven G. Salaita, The News-Gazette reports. But Anita Hill’s cancellation is not a show of support for Mr. Salaita, who was not appointed to a tenured professorship after controversy over his anti-Israel tweets and who has sued in response.
“I na├»vely thought that a fruitful conversation on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign could lead to reconciliation based on the shared interest behind both, even with the Salaita affair as a backdrop,” wrote Ms. Hill in a column for the Huffington Post. ”I have concluded that the productive discussion I envisioned cannot occur in the shadow of active litigation and the resulting present intense polarity.”
