Strengthening the faculty’s role in governance

Collegiate Times
February 10th, 2015

While the seats of the Fralin auditorium may be filled with students during the day, on the night of Feb. 10 the auditorium hosted the Faculty Senate. The group convened to discuss their role in university governance and their opinions on Virginia Tech’s new general education requirements.
Donna Young, senior program officer at the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), attended the faculty senate meeting as a guest to aid the discussion of faculty authority in regards to university issues.

During her presentation, Young touched on a flow chart found on the University Council website that exhibited the governance structure at Virginia Tech. At the top was the Board of Visitors, which was followed by leaders and groups like the president, the Advisory Council on Strategic Budgeting and Planning and the University Council.
