The UW System could face a budget cut resulting in $300 million in
lost revenue – although the number is still uncertain – as well as
sweeping changes that might imperil the engrained traditions of shared
governance and tenure.
In addition, there are moves to make the UW a “public authority” –
more autonomous from state government’s rules and possibly fiscally.
Several years ago, proposals were floated to make UW-Madison a public
authority – essentially split it off from the System – but the current
proposal would likely apply to the entire UW System, officials said.
“It’s one of the biggest challenges the campus ever faced,” said UWM Chancellor Mark Mone on Friday
