The writer Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar has spent a decade in Doha, the
fast-growing capital of the small, wealthy emirate of Qatar. In a
memoir of her time there so far, From Dunes to Dior,
she describes it as a place that "resists and embraces modernization"
and as "full of contradictions, opportunities, and challenges."
An adjunct professor of writing and literature, Ms. Rajakumar has had
her own share of all of those features. As an author and an instructor
who works at Northwestern University’s branch campus here, she has
helped foster a literary community in a country that restricts freedom
