Qatar Inspires a Writing Instructor Despite Censorship

The Chronicle of Higher Education
January 27th, 2015

The writer Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar has spent a decade in Doha, the fast-growing capital of the small, wealthy emirate of Qatar. In a memoir of her time there so far, From Dunes to Dior, she describes it as a place that "resists and embraces modernization" and as "full of contradictions, opportunities, and challenges."
An adjunct professor of writing and literature, Ms. Rajakumar has had her own share of all of those features. As an author and an instructor who works at Northwestern University’s branch campus here, she has helped foster a literary community in a country that restricts freedom of expression.
