A report by the Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign says the university should
reconsider its controversial last-minute decision not to hire Steven G. Salaita for a faculty position after he posted strident tweets about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.
According to the Champaign News-Gazette,
the committee said Mr. Salaita’s Twitter posts, however incendiary,
did not make him “unfit” to teach, regardless of how many supporters of
Israel opposed his appointment to the university’s faculty.
The university did not immediately respond to the committee’s recommendation, the News-Gazette reported.
