Faced with low pay, no health benefits and a lack of job security, adjunct instructors at colleges and universities around the country are pushing for unionization in the hope of achieving a greater voice on campus.
In California, part-time instructors at about a dozen colleges are holding union contract negotiations for the first time or campaigning for the right to do so, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Service Employees International Union, which has sought to unionize McDonald's employees, won faculty elections this week to represent part-time faculty at a number of schools, including Whittier College and the San Francisco Art Institute, the LA Times reports.
