AAUP Will Investigate Drastic Cuts at U. of Southern Maine

The American Association of University Professors has opened an investigation into drastic budget cuts at the University of Southern Maine, the Portland Press Herald reports.
The university has announced it will cut dozens of faculty positions and several academic programs to help close a $16-million budget deficit. Those measures “have raised significant issues of academic freedom, tenure, and due process that are of basic concern to the academic community,” the association said in a letter to the college’s president, David T. Flanagan.
A spokesman for the college, Chris Quint, said in a written statement that the university had adhered to its policies in making the cuts. Some faculty members have said the decisions had been made in a top-down fashion, violating the principles of shared governance.
